A Nigerian immigrant’s dream came true
when President Barack Obama signed
into law a rare private bill granting him
permanent residency in the Unites States.
CNN reported that Victor Chukwueke,
who lives in Michigan on an expired
visa, came to the United States 11 years
ago to undergo treatment for massive
face tumors.
He graduated from a university in the
state, and plans to attend an Ohio medical
school that requires him to have
permanent residency, also known as a
green card.
In a rare act, the United States Congress
passed a private bill this month granting
him permanent residency. Obama signed
the bill two days ago.
Private bills — which only apply to one
person and mostly focus on immigration
— are rarely approved. His is the only
one to be passed in Congress in two
years.
Responding, Mr. Chukwueke said, “I was
overwhelmed with joy; it was nothing
less than a miracle,” the 26-year-old says.
“Only in this country can so many
miraculous and wonderful things
happen to someone like me.”

Hundreds of tea plantation workers have set alight their boss's bungalow in north-east India, burning to death the owner and his wife, officials say.
Angry workers surrounded the bungalow at Kunapathar in Assam state late on Wednesday, following a two-week long dispute with the management.
Police said the incident happened after the management asked some workers to leave their accommodation.
More than half of India's tea output comes from 800 tea estates in Assam.
Local official SS Meenakshi Sundaram said some 700 tea garden workers surrounded the manager's bungalow on Wednesday evening and set it on fire. Two vehicles belonging to the manager were also torched.
The charred bodies of Mridul Kumar Bhattacharyya and his wife, Rita, were later recovered from the debris, Mr Sundaram said.
Police have detained three workers in connection with the incident.
Officials said Mr Bhattacharyya and his workers had been locked in a dispute for the past two weeks.
They said Mr Bhattacharyya had also faced protests at another tea estate that he owned two years ago.
In that dispute, angry workers set fire to his tea factory near the state capital, Guwahati, after he had allegedly fired on a crowd that had gathered near his house to protest against a reported attack on a local woman.
Several incidents of attacks on tea executives by angry workers have been reported from Assam in recent years.

Figo: Ronaldo deserves Ballon d'Or

09:27 0 Comments A+ a-

Cristiano Ronaldo has every chance of winning the Ballon d'Or, according to Portugal legend Luis Figo.

The former Real Madrid and Barcelona player believes the current Seleccao skipper fully deserves to receive the award after a storming year for club and country, but insisted that there are other worthy candidates as well.
"There's nothing to stop him [Ronaldo] from winning it," Figo was quoted as saying by Mundo Deportivo.

"He is one of the favorites to win all the individual trophies there are, even more so this year, because I think he had a good season in the league and did well at the Euros.

"There are a lot of people involved in the choice, so it is always difficult to know who will win."

Figo went on to reveal his pride at having won the award back in 2000, but added that he feels it was more difficult to claim the prize during his career.

"It was one of the most special moments in my career on the individual side of things, because there are few players who have the opportunity to win this trophy.

"At the time, there were lots of players who were in with a shout, whilst now there are four or five big candidates. It was a privilege and a proud moment for me."

They argued that since their son died in a helicopter crash, the body should be given to the family to bury in line with their tradition not minding the top ranks he occupied in the army and the polity. However, it was leant that the Nigerian Army, which regards lateGen. Azazi as one of its heroes, pleaded that the burial be done in the state capital to enable its officers and men to accord their departed hero full military honours in line with their tradition. At one of the meetings in Yenagoa, yesterday, the army pointed out the huge logistic challenges that would be involvedin taking the body of the late General and hordes of military personnel and equipment to Peretorugbene for the burial. They argued that if the burial wasdone in Peretorugbene, it would not be possible to ferry in the number of personnel and personalities expected to performand grace the occasion because of the rough tide at this time of the year. The officers were said to have pointed out that the burial of an outstanding officer like Azazi should be done in a place where the top brass of all arms of the Defence Ministry, where he served as Chief of Army Staff, Chief of Defence Staff and lately, National Security Adviser, should be able to attend in large number to accord him the last respect. PDP to CPC: You ‘re blind to Jonathan’s govt achievements

20:52 0 Comments A+ a-

Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has cautioned Nigerians against being taken in by what it claims as the rhetoric of the Congress for Progressive Change, CPC, a party it claimed would lead Nigeria on the path to Somalia if given the opportunity. Reacting to the CPC’s criticism of the Christmas day speech of President Goodluck Jonathan, thePDP National Publicity Secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh, described the statement as a ritual bereft of imagination or sincerity. The CPC had in the rebuttal described the PDP as being “moreinterested in seizing political power rather than the adequate planning for effectual governance,” noting what it claimed as the trillions of naira wasted in multiple fraud schemes, including the oil subsidy regime. President Goodluck Jonathan andGen. Muhammadu Buhari (rtd) The PDP said: “President Jonathanhas invested heavily in critical infrastructures such as power, road and rail transport, security, agriculture, education among others. While the maturity span of some of these infrastructure is long term and are expected to yield benefits in coming years, there is abundant evidence that steady gains are already crystalizing in sectors such as power, education and rail transport. ”The CPC will definitely be blind to this steady progress because constructive engagement is not the ultimate motivation of its criticism,” the statement added. On the allegation that the PDP governments mismanaged resources of the country, the PDPsaid: ”Even in 2011 when the CPC tookdesperation to a criminal level, orchestrating an orgy of election violence that claimed many lives, Nigerians stood firm for the PDP in an election adjudged locally and internationally as the most credible in the nation’s recent record. But has the PDP squandered its mandate,” the statement asked. ”This can only be true in the diseased imagination of the CPC. The PDP has remained the only truly national party on whose shoulders revolve the unity of thenation. Need we say that a Nigeria in the hands of a political party like the CPC is on an express road to Somalia. Besides, the statement continued,”the PDP met Nigeria a pariah state, retrieved and returned it tothe centre stage of global reckoning. It is also on record that at a time the economy of thewestern nations was hobbled by the global melt down with banks collapsing, no bank in Nigeria suffered similar fate. ”Similarly, as part of the party’s strategy against corruption, the PDP liberalized the economy and threw the door open to generate new jobs. The party also established anti-corruption agencies, the EFCC and ICPC as well as enacted the Freedom of Information law to enhance transparency in governance. The party’s dispassion in winning the battle on corruption has seen even senior members of the party convicted for corruption. ”We must add, that our battle oncorruption is total and that President Jonathan has won the most critical aspect of it which is against electoral corruption. Nigerians now go to the polls andare sure their votes will count””. There is no shorter road to good governance than when mandate and withdrawal of it depend entirely on the people,” the statement concluded.

The CPC spokesman, Mr. Fashakin, said Messrs. Obasanjo and Jega contributed to the crisis in Ghanaian elections. The spokesperson of one of Nigeria’s largest opposition parties, Rotimi Fashakin, has accused former President Olusegun Obasanjo, and Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC of corrupting the Ghanaian electoral process The National Publicity Secretary of the Congress for Progressive Change, CPC, Rotimi Fashakin, said the two men are the cause of the protests that followed the recently held presidential electionin Ghana. In an interview with Premium Times, Mr. Fashakin said “The opposition (in Ghana) should complain because people that came from Nigeria went to corrupt their system.” “Of course when Jega went there, they knew that election manipulation and rigging has come. When Obasanjo went there, they knew that the generalissmo of do or die politics has come, they knew that their election may be fraught with danger. “So they should now know betterthe kind of people they invite to monitor their elections,” the opposition spokesman said. Mr. Fashakin also spoke about corruption in Nigeria and the on-going merger talks by opposition political parties and how the ruling Peoples Democratic Party “hired IT Consultants” and disguised them as Youth Corps members to rig elections.

A Karu Senior Magistrates’ Court in the FCT on Monday sentenced a landlord, Kwanben Goma, 69, to three months imprisonment for breaking the window of his tenant’s room and assaulting her. Goma was earlier charged with joint act, criminal force, assault, mischief and theft. The Prosecutor, Cpl. Pascal Njoku, told the court that Goma and another person currently at large broke the window of his tenant, Fumilayo Obafemi, on Sept. 7 and stole N50,000. “When she asked him why he broke her window, he physically assaulted her,’’ the prosecutor said. Njoku added that the offence contravened sections 97, 262, 326and 246 of the Penal Code. At the mention of the case in September, Goma pleaded not guilty and was granted bail. However, during the judgment trial on Dec. 24, Goma said “the woman is still owing me house rent from January 2012 to October 2012. “All the accusations are false, I did not do them, all I want is for her to swear that I did it. “I will also swear that I did not dothe things I am accused of.’’ The Magistrate, Mr Lateef Bolaji, however said that Goma did not convince the court that he did not commit the offence. He said: “the testimony of the first defence witness completely contradicted that of the second defence witness. “When given the opportunity to examine the nominal complainantand to cross-examine the prosecution witnesses, the accused refused to explore it. “I, therefore, find the accused guilty as charged.’’ He sentenced him to one month imprisonment with an option of N4,000 fine. Bolaji also ordered that Goma should pay N50,000 compensation to Obafemi.

CNPP faults Jonathan’s promise ofa better 2013

Conference of Nigerian Political Parties, CNPP, has poked the promise made by President Goodluck Jonathan in his Christmas message to Nigerians toimprove on critical infrastructuresin the country next year, describing the President’s promiseas empty and diversionary. The CNPP, regretted that since the advent of democracy in the country, Nigerians had become victims of incessant lies and manipulations by a PDP government that failed to deliver on all promises it made to Nigerians. Benue State Chairman of the CNPP, Engr. Baba Agan who yesterday stated this in Makurdi, urged Nigerians to disregard the promise by the President or be prepared for another tortious year of failed promises by a government that has been overwhelmed by development challenges in the country. According to him, ”We have been told the same thing over and over again by successive PDP governments in this country, but what do we get, steady deterioration of all critical infrastructure in the country”. “The truth is that the present administration in the country, likethe ones before it has been overwhelmed by the development challenges confronting the country and the only option left for them is to give Nigerians false hope throughlies and fallacious remarks”. “Let’s be realistic to each other, isanything working in this country? There are security challenges, the people cannot enjoy steady power supply even for 24 hours, most filling stations in the countryare not dispensing products to motorists, our roads are in terrible condition, even the airspace is not safe anymore especially with the recent air disasters around the country, Nigerian are just suffering and smiling in a huge jungle” “We cannot get it right as a country until the President comesfull blast against corruption in high places in this country which everyone is turning a blind eye to”. According to Agan, “Nigeria has become a huge fraud in its self but our leaders are not doing anything to stem the embarrassing situation, they only engage in rhetorics to suit a particular purpose and situation and after that it become every looter to himself where ever he finds himself and the loot is available”. The CNPP chairman urged Nigerians to pray for peace in thecountry even as he counseled that the unity of the country mustbe upheld by all. Culled: Vanguard

Premier League – Hernandez gives Manchester United amazing win

20:32 0 Comments A+ a-

Javier Hernandez scored a 90th-minute winner as Manchester United overcame Newcastle United 4-3 in an extraordinary Premier League game at Old Trafford. The Premier League leaders twice came from behind in a match of controversy and thrilling excitement. James Perch gave Newcastle an early lead before Jonny Evans scored first at the right end, then the wrong one amid uproar over an offside that was withdrawn by ref Mike Dean. Patrice Evra restored parity just before the hour only for Papiss Cisse to put Newcastle in front again. Robin van Persie quickly equalisedand Manchester United missed a host of chances before Hernandez finally netted the winner in the final minute of normal time. Manchester City’s unexpected defeat to Newcastle means United go seven points clear at the half-way point in the Premier League season. The absence of Wayne Rooney from the Manchester United team sheet caused an immediate stir, especially in light of his axeing from the side last festive season following a Boxing Day night out. United were quick to issue a statement saying Rooney and Ashley Young had been injured intraining, while Danny Welbeck was taken ill overnight. The embryonic controversy was blown out of the water by 90 minutes of nearly unbroken incident. Perch gave Newcastle the lead onfour minutes after David De Gea spilled a seemingly innocuous Demba Ba shot. Manchester United were off the pace with their central midfield pairing of Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes showing their years. Evans levelled on 25 minutes when Newcastle failed to clear a free-kick, Hernandez saw a shot parried and the defender tucked away the rebound. Danny Simpson hit a 25-yard shotfrom the right side when Papiss Cisse was in an offside position. As the ball came in Evans, who was marking Cisse, touched the ball into his own net. The offside flag went up against Cisse, but after prolonged discussion with his linesman referee Mike Dean allowed the goal. The officials rationale was that Cisse, who did not touch the ball or block De Gea’s view, was not interfering with play. Alex Ferguson predictably flew into a rage, berating both the referee and his assistant. He will feel that a striker three yards from goal is always interfering, and that Evans would not have scored an own goal had Cisse notbeen there. Despite Ferguson’s fury, by the letter of the law the referee’s decision was probably correct – and he might have focussed on his own team’s sub-standard performance rather than lash outat the officials. Sylvain Marveaux hit the bar with a free-kick as the home side repaired to their dressing room lucky to be just a goal down. Evra made a captain’s contribution on 58 minutes, firing home from the edge of the box for his second goal in as many games and his fourth of the season. But Cisse put Newcastle back in front when he converted a low pull-back from United old boy Gabriel Obertan. Almost immediately, Van Persie found the bottom-right corner at the second attempt to make it three-all and a home win seemedinevitable. Hernandez missed a hat-trick of presentable chances – one a sitter of a header from eight yards – while Van Persie and Antonio Valencia also finished errantly. At the other end, Sammy Ameobisaw a shot clang back off the post, but the final word went to Hernandez. The Mexican timed his run perfectly to meet Michael Carrick’s through ball and slide the ball under Krul to settle one of the games of the season.

According to the statement, Oritsejafor made the donations toreduce poverty in the country. The yearly empowerment programme was organised by theWorld of Life Bible Church through Eagle Flight Micro Finance Bank owned by the church. He said the responsibility of government at all levels was to cater for all Nigerians, stressing that the government would have failed if it refused to help the poor. Oritsejafor said, “Why is it that wealthy Nigerians and corporate organisations cannot do much more than what the church is doing in terms of bringing succour to the people? “There are institutions, corporate bodies, industrial establishments that are entrenched in different communities and are making millions of Naira. You want to look at how much some of these companies are putting back into the communities. It would be ridiculous how meagre it is.”

Gunmen burn church, schools, kill pastor, eight others

DESPITE the assurances of safety by the Joint Task Force (JTF) in Yobe State, violence erupted again as gunmen suspected to beBoko Haram members attacked the Church of Christ in Nigeria (COCIN) at Piri village near Potiskum. They torched the church and killed the pastor, Yohana Sini (50)and five other worshipers in the early hours of Tuesday. Piri is two kilometres west of Potiskum town, which is the epicentre of Boko Haram. The gunmen, according to an eyewitness, Ibrahim Audu, killed Sini and Daniel Edi, by slitting their throats, while four other residents were shot dead before their wives and children at about 1.45 a.m. Audu said: “We were woken up and terrified with the sporadic gunshots and multiple explosions at this church at about 1.00 a.m., when the gunmen set ablaze 21 houses in the village in their three-hour attacks and killings in Piri village. They also killed our pastor, Mallam Yohana Sini, in the glare of his wife and children by slitting his throat at about 1.36a.m. of that tragic night.” The Guardian also learnt that eight hours after the attacks, the emir of Fika, Alhaji Muhammadu Idrissa Ibn Abali Mohammed Idrissa visited the village, and pledged that more soldiers and policemen would be deployed to prevent further attacks and killings. The four villagers that were killedin the attacks, according to Audu, included Adamau Garba, Ishaku Garba, Solomon Saleh and Haruna Lawal. Confirming the incident on Tuesday, the Yobe State Police Command spokesman, Salisu Adamu said that at about midnight of Tuesday, suspected gunmen attacked one of the villages near Potiskum and burnt down one church and over a dozen houses. He said the pastor of the church was also feared killed along with some residents of the village. He said no arrests were made yetby either the police or JTF. Violence also broke out on Tuesday in Gubio, Barawa and a village in Dikwa of Borno State, asgunmen suspected to be Boko Haram members set ablaze the official residence of the council chairman and lodge, a palace, two primary schools and several houses in Bulabulin ward of Gubio. They killed three residents at Barawa in the early hours of Tuesday, Gubio and Barawa, a border town with Cameroun. The attacks in Dikwa village, according to an eyewitness, Saina Modu, led to the torching of six houses and the residence of a village head with no single life lost in the attacks at 1.35 a.m. A Gubio resident and an eyewitness, Alhaji Mali Gubio, toldThe Guardian on telephone yesterday: “The gunmen struck this town at about midnight with Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) and petrol-bombs, and burnt down many public buildings, including our district head’s palace, the council lodge and official residence of our chairman before the gunmen went to torch two of our primary schools. We were terrified and shocked with the sporadic gunshots and explosion that rocked this town for about two hours.” The children in Bulabulin ward, he added, could not sleep, as several houses were also set ablaze by the suspected gunmen, and fled towards the Gubio-Damasak road. He however noted that the attacks on public buildings, including the palace of the districthead and official residence of thecouncil chairman, were “politicallymotivated,” querying why did the gunmen only target public buildings in their multiple attacks, without killing even a single resident of Gubio.” At Barawa, a border town with Cameroun, suspected gunmen in separate attacks also killed three residents in their respective houses at about 1.45 a.m. on Tuesday. An eyewitness and neighbour to one of the victims said: “Five gunmen came on three unmarked motorcycles and attacked three houses after midnight. They chanted, ‘God is great!’ before tying the hands of the victims behind their backs andslitting the throats of my neighbours. “What have they done to the gunmen to warrant these killings?” asked the neighbour in the telephone interview. Confirming the separate incidentsyesterday, the spokesman of Borno State Police Command, Gideon Jibrin, said that there wereattacks in northern and southern senatorial districts of Borno State, where many public buildings weredestroyed by the suspected armed hoodlums at Gubio, Barawa and a village in Dikwa council area of Borno State. He said in the Barawa border town, three people were feared killed, after the gunmen attacked three houses at about 1.35 a.m., adding that the number of the casualties in the Dikwa village wasyet to be sent in by the area police commander. But despite the cost in human lives and property incurred by theChristian community in the North as a result of the insurgency, the Bishop of Kaduna Catholic Diocese, Most Rev. Man’oso Ndagoso said that all Catholic faithful had in the spirit of the Christmas forgiven Boko Haram for bombing its churches and killing its members in the state. Besides, the Kaduna State Governor, Muhktar Ramalan Yero, has urged all Christians andthe entire people of Kaduna State to be committed to religious and understanding of one another. In a message to the Catholic community in the state, Ndagoso pointed out that forgiving Boko Haram was in line with the forgiveness Jesus Christ exhibited when he was betrayed and crucified by his enemies, urging all Christians to show love even to their enemies. He said the act of forgiveness wasalso necessary since Jesus was born on Christmas day as a peacemaker and joy to the wholeworld, stressing that it would amount to dishonouring Jesus to celebrate His birthday with rancour, malice and revenge. He reminded Christians that violence, political and social upheaval were witnessed during the time of Christ on earth, sayingthat whatever evil that was being perpetrated in modern days by Boko Haram should not be a thing of surprise to anybody, and that Christians should restrain theurge to retaliate as Jesus did to His attackers. Ndagoso expressed gratitude to the state government, corporate organisations and individuals whostood by the archdiocese during the bombing and killing periods. The cleric also used the opportunity to restate his sympathies for flood victims in thestate during the rainy season when some parts of the state were submerged by flood, leading to destruction of human lives, houses, farmlands, crops and roads. He expressed the fear that there might be food scarcity next year as a result of the negative impact of the flood on farmlands and crops, and appealed to farmers, particularly in the remote rural areas that were not affected by flood not to seize the opportunityto increase prices of their farm produce. Also, Mr. Usman Gwary, the Commissioner of Police in Zamfara, has assured the people that the police command is on top of the crime situation in the state, regardless of the recent killings in some areas. He gave the assurance in Gusau at a news conference held on Tuesday over the spate of killings by gunmen in some parts of the state. Gwary stressed that the commandhad been working to ensure that normalcy returned to the affected areas, where gunmen killed 10 vigilantes. “We have been strategising and putting our intelligence gathering together but you know we cannot make some of our plans public so as not to jeopardise ouroperations,” he said. “Just two days ago, I deployed three pick-up vans with heavily-armed mobile and regular policemen in the troubled area on Zurmi-Katsina Road; they will continue to mount surveillance there until we are certain that there is no more problem,” he, however, added. “We are hopeful that the gunmen, who attacked and killed10 members of the vigilance group, will soon be arrested and this is based on our intelligence gathering.” The police chief appealed to the people to assist the police with useful information about suspected movements of criminalseven before they perpetrated their crime “so that the police canquickly move in and tackle the situation.” Gwary, however, lamented that some criminal hideouts in the state were difficult to penetrate by the police because of the dearth of access roads and communications network in such areas. “It will be suicidal to insist that the police should go and make arrests in such hideouts when they do not know the areas and the way the criminals do,” he added. Besides, security chiefs in Plateau State have called on communitiesin Riyom Local Council Area to work together for peace to return to the area. They made the call on Christmas day when they visited Bagad village in the council where a woman died in an attack on Sunday. Another woman was injured in an attack during which unknown persons set 10 thatch houses on fire. Maj.-Gen. Henry Ayoola, the Commander of the Special Task Force in Plateau who led other security chiefs on the visit, said peace would return to the area ifthe Berom and Fulani forgave each other and worked for peace. Ayoola said they were in Bagad tocondole with the people and share in their grief, adding that the perpetrators of the crimes would be brought to book. “We are here to let you know that we are concerned about what happened and to share in your feelings. We will do everything possible to arrest the perpetrators,” he said. Ayoola said the security agencies would protect all law-abiding citizens irrespective of tribe and faith. “We are only enemies of those who make themselves enemies ofpeace and we will hunt them until they change their ways,” he said. Mr. Chris Olakpe, the Commissioner of Police in Plateau, threatened to arrest community leaders where attacks occurred persistently. “I would hold the chiefs responsible. They are the leaders of people and should have proper knowledge of happenings of their communities,” he said. He noted that no religion preached violence or encouragedkilling and warned that law enforcement agents would deal with anyone who killed in the name of religion. Olakpe advised the youths not to allow themselves to be used by wicked leaders to perpetrate evil.

NEW KADUNA GOVERNOR NOMINATES STATA PDP

10:26 0 Comments A+ a-

The new governor of Kaduna State, Muktar Ramalan Yero, on Monday nominated the state Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Nuhu Bajoga, as his deputy.
Yero ascended from the office of deputy governor to governor last week Sunday following the death in a helicopter crash of Governor Patrick Yakowa in Okoroba, Bayelsa State on December 15, 2012.
The State Commissioner for Information, Alhaji Saidu Adamu, confirmed the development to newsmen on Monday after the governor met with principal officers of the state house of assembly.
He also confirmed that Bajoga’s name had been sent to the assembly for necessary screening.
Bajoga, who is from Southern Kaduna, is believed to have been picked by Vice-President Namadi Sambo, who is regarded as the political godfather in the state.
Yakowa was Sambo’s deputy until he was picked as vice-president in 2010 while Yero served as the accountant of the vice-president’s private company for 10 years before he became a commissioner in the state.
Bajoga’s nomination is expected to split Southern Kaduna, as some interests had kicked against his choice.
He is believed to have been picked at a meeting of the state PDP some days ago, chaired by the vice-president.
The widow of Yakowa, Amina, was one of those tipped to pick the deputy governor’s slot.

NO FIGHT BETWEEN OBJ AND JONATHAN-- ABATI

22:40 0 Comments A+ a-

The Presidency on Sunday denied the existence of a rift between President Goodluck Jonathan and ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo, saying the reported “frosty relationship” between them was “mere drama which is a very important element of politics and governance.”
Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati, said this while reacting to recent interview granted by a leader of the Niger Delta Volunteer Force, Mujaheed Dokubo-Asari.
Asari-Dokubo had, amongother things, said Jonathan would not rule beyond 2015 because he is surrounded by greedy politicians who caused the rift between him and Obasanjo.
But Abati in an interview with State House correspondents in Abuja said, “I keep saying it; there is no rift between President Jonathan and former President Obasanjo. The President has utmost respect for the former President whom he regards as his father. He even calls him ‘Baba.’
“I don’t think anybody can say he has any evidence anywhere where the President has been disrespectful to the elderly man. So, those things that you see in the newspapers about people saying President Jonathan and former President Obasanjo are quarrelling are exaggerated. They do not reflect the truth,”
The presidential spokesman claimed that “some persons” were just bringing up issues in an attempt to set up the two leaders.
He said that Jonathan and Obasanjo were experienced enough to discern the tactics.
On Dokubo-Asari’s utterances, Abati said the comment did not reflect the feelings of Nigerians about the President and his administration.
He said the ex-militant leader was a “member of the house” and that his outburst came as a surprise to the Presidency.
“I don’t know whether it is a wise thing for you to be a member of the house and then for you to stand outside and urinate into that same house. Doing so may serve the purpose of sensationalism and it may please some mischief makers, but the truth of the matter is that wise people may think that that is not really the right way to go,” he said.
Abati described Dokubo-Asari’s claim that some greedy politicians around Jonathan had cut him off from his roots the “a crab mentality theory of human relationship.”
Explaining the theory, he said, “If you put a number of crabs in a bucket and one of them tries to go to the top, the other crabs will be struggling to pull that one that is trying to go to the top down. They will keep reminding that top crab that you are one of us; this is where you belong and you cannot leave us; we are together.”
According to Abati, when the principle is translated into governance it means that leaders are put under pressure because there are many people saying they don’t want progress because they all want to be at the same level.
He urged Dokubo-Asari to be consistent, honest and truthful, and be less worried about those who are preventing other people from seeing the President.
He said, “President Jonathan is not running an Ijaw project. He is running a Nigerian project and I keep saying he is a man who is very conscious of his place in history. At the end of the day, whether the people say they are being blocked from having access to him, or even those of us who work for him, it is important to remember that the only person that will be called to come and give account is President Jonathan.
“That is the man Nigerians voted for and all of us, whether we are his kinsmen or we are his staff or we are his friends, I think we should focus more on the Nigerian project, the Nigerian assignment that President Jonathan has been given and worry less about insinuations like all these ‘people are blocking me from having access’, ‘he has forgotten his brothers’, ‘he is arguing with a particular person.”
Meanwhile, Jonathan on Sunday promised Nigerians that his administration would perform better in 2013 and improve on their welfare in all aspects.
The President gave the assurance while speaking shortly after he had laid the foundation stone of the Living Faith Foundation’s Bible College in Kaduna.
“Let me assure all of you and indeed all Nigerians that 2013 will be better for us than 2012 in all aspects of the nation’s history. The New Year shall be better for us in terms of job creation, wealth creation and improved security among others,” the President told the worshippers,” he said.
Jonathan urged Nigerians not to lose hope because he and members of his team had resolved to make significant changes in the country during his tenure.
He said although the changes might seem to be slow in coming because of the tedious processes involved, they would soon be manifesting.
He said he was aware that people found it difficult to continue to believe the government because of the challenges they are facing.
“Sometimes, challenges make people doubt the sincerity of government, but I am confident that God knows everything,” he said.

MIDDLE BELT ALLEGES COMPLICITY IN YAKOWA'S DEATH

22:37 0 Comments A+ a-

The Middle Belt Forum alleged on Sunday in Kaduna that the death of Governor Patrick Yakowa in helicopter crash was part of a plot by the core North to eliminate the Middle Belt leaders.
Yakowa; his aide, Dauda Tsoho; the ex-National Security Adviser, Gen. Andrew Azazi, and three others died in a helicopter crash penultimate Saturday while returning from the burial of the father of Presidential aide on Research, Documentation and Strategy, Oronto Douglas, in Bayelsa State penultimate Saturday.
National President of the forum, Mr. Pius Attah, in company with the Director of Research, Mr. Augustus Bayaro, at a news conference on Sunday in Kaduna, noted that the recent threat to the life of Benue State governor, Gabriel Suswam, as well as the series of crises in Plateau State were part of the conspiracy against Middle Belt leaders.
Attah said, “We consider Governor Patrick Yakowa of Kaduna State could not escape the plot but died and all the circumstances surrounding the helicopter crash at Nembe in Bayesa State were suspicious. This would leave unhealed wounds in the hearts of Middle Belt and concerned Nigerians.
“What has been secretly held and kept as a long plotted strategy of core North expansion and hegemony for the subduing, subjugation and castration of the Middle Belt region come to the fore glaringly.
“We consider the helicopter crash at Kabong village in Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State that lead to the death of Deputy Inspector General of Police, John Haruna, from Taraba State as a conspiracy against him and the Middle Belt people. The Federal Government set an investigation team to that effect but up till now, the report has not been made known to the public.”
The forum added, “Again we consider the Governor of Taraba State was not left out in the plot. Governor Suntai of Taraba is still in a hospital in Germany.
“Governor Gabriel Suswam of Benue State is under threat by the core North terrorists sponsored by their evil perpetrators both at home and internationally in order to achieve their selfish motives.”
The group said those behind the alleged plan were also after Plateau State Governor Jonah Jang’s life.
Attah said, “Governor Jonah Jang is also on their list through constant attacks. Many a time he was targeted to be unseated from his position or killed, but their target fail because he walks with God.
“We therefore, view seriously the motive behind these acts as an attempt to keep the Middle Belt region perpetually backward economically, politically and other wise by constantly projecting crisis situation.
“There is a clear indication and manifestation of terrorists coup d’etat to make Plateau ungovernable because of Fulani attacks on a daily bases at Barkin Ladi and Riyom local government areas of Plateau State, including the sponsorship of what is known as unknown soldiers even when some have been identified by indigenes in the two local government areas.
“For ages, Plateau and other Middle Belt states have been the target of all forms of attack and sustained aggression.
“As the game plan unfolds, it has become clear to the unsuspecting that the dislocation and castration of Middle Belt strongholds through a strategy of destabilising and eliminating their leaders is now the vogue. They have been hunting the lives of Middle Belt leaders.”

Don't Miss Christmas

'Where is He who has been born...?' Matthew 2:2 NKJV

Matthew records: 'Now after Jesus was born...wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, saying, 'Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we have seen His star in the East and have come to worship Him...when...they saw the young Child with Mary His mother, [they] fell down and worshipped Him.' (Matthew 2:1-11) Because of the International Date Line you can fly from America on December 24th and arrive in Australia on December 26th, missing Christmas Day altogether. But you can also stay home and miss it, end up exhausted, broke, glad it's over, and not experience the joy it brings. Don't let that happen to you. Try something different. Before you dive into gift giving, partying or watching parades and sport on television, gather your loved ones around and read them the Christmas story. Your children will never forget it. They might even make it a tradition they carry on with their children too: (1) Tell them that whether you are rich like the wise men or poor like the shepherds, Jesus loves you. Your social status makes no difference; He values you as you are. (2) Tell them that when Jesus came, He never left. His Word says, '...I will never leave you nor forsake you. So we may boldly say: The Lord is my helper...' (Hebrews 13:5-6 NKJV) (3) Tell them every prophecy concerning Christ's first coming came to pass, and that the prophecies in the Bible concerning His second coming are being fulfilled right now. So if they're wise they'll seek Him, surrender to Him, serve Him and be ready when He comes.

OSAZE BLASTS KESHI FOR LEAVING HIM OUT OF AFCON SQUAD

22:32 0 Comments A+ a-

                                Osaze
West Brom striker Osaze Odemwingie who has been left out of Nigeria’s team to the 2013 Africa Nations Cup has reacted angrily to his exclusion lashing out at Super Eagles coach Stephen Keshi and the Nigeria Football Federation. The Nigerian spent time on Sunday on social network Twitter giving his own story and attacking anyone perceived to have played a role in his being cut from the team.
Odemwingie, Obafemi Martins and Taye Taiwo were some of the significant names left out of the 32-man squad listed for the final camping in Faro, Portugal.
The Nigerian striker expressed disgust at having to learn of his non-inclusion through the media, insisting it showed lack of professionalism. He maintained that Keshi lied on the reasons given for his exclusion and fingered what he described as other reasons outside the game of football.
“Keshi has no footballing reasons not to invite me but is not saying the truth. He is still in my plans he said haha coach u no dey my plans.
“On my non-inclusion to the Eagles list I am not surprised. Not surprised Keshi and NFF couldn’t tell me themselves. No personality!
“We talk through press hahaha how come I am the only stubborn one but no ex-Eagles player was sent off from the team with respect? This is all a comedy and our poor fans are being fed with lies while they cutting the cake for themselves.”
“NFF spokesman told MTN he is arrogant? I am arrogant? Why did country’s president threaten to close down our federation for two years?”
“Nff member just called me. Of cos got insulted. I told him I sang national anthem for ten years to be treated like this.”
In one of the several tweets Osaze complained that the national team has not had “a real captain” for many years and suggesting that it had effect on the team.
He said, “This might sound disrespectful but Eagles had no good captain for many years. Everyone looking only after himself.”
Osaze  did not limit his outbursts to Keshi as he also dared any other challenger.
He said, “To some who wanna put mouth here please act like men. When two men talk 3rd has nothing to do. So Ikpebas and the rest talk to me face2face.”
The Eagles striker who has had several clashes over the years with different national coaches went down the memory lane as he explained all that transpired between him and a former Eagles coach Samson Siasia and Lars Lagerback. He alleged that Siasia dropped him because he did not endorse him for the Eagles top job.
He wrote, “Cos after we got Olympic silver I didn’t say Siasia is ready for Eagles he waited till he gets the job to axe me?
“Me and Apam begged him to take (Sani) Kaita in the Olympic team. He told us he wants to play Efe Ambrose there who is a centre back? Good plan. The only reason me and Siasia fell out was over kits that were not enough ‘cos they were on sale as the Olympics were on going. Shame!
“WBA needed me back for an important game and Siasia refused to let me miss a midweek friendly game?
“Why didn’t Lagerback continue with Super Eagles after World Cup? Chop and run was his plan and they knew it.”

EFCC DECLARES FORMER GOVERNOR ABUBAKAR AUDU OF KOGI WANTED

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission
(EFCC) has declared former governor of Kogi State, Abubakar Audu, wanted for offences bordering on conspiracy, stealing and misappropriation of public fund.
A press statement signed by the acting head of media and publicity of the commission, Wilson Uwujaren, said the action followed the failure of the suspect to respond to invitation by the anti-graft agency.
Consequently, the EFCC asked anyone having useful information about the whereabouts of the suspect to notify its offices in Abuja , Port Harcourt,Lagos, Kano and Enugu, or report at the nearest police station.
Uwajaren further said the attempt by the EFCC to arrest Audu at his 32, Sulaiman Barau Street , Asokoro, Abuja residence on December 11, 2012, failed as he allegedly evaded arrest.
‘’The former governor is alleged to have fraudulently enriched himself to the tune of over N4 billion while he held sway as governor of Kogi State between 1999 and 2003.
“The move to arrest the ex-governor followed a Supreme Court ruling of November 23, 2012, which dismissed the ex-governor’s appeal to continue to protract his corruption trial by EFCC.”
But  Audu had yesterday approached a Federal High Court sitting in  Abuja Division. asking  it to stop the EFCC from launching fresh legal offensive against him on the ground that it amounted to “an abuse of court process”.
He asked the court to award the sum of N100 million representing damages for the unlawful and unconstitutional invasion of his privacy, home and family life.
In an originating summons filed by Mike Ozekhome (SAN) on behalf of Audu, he asked the court to put to an end “an abuse of court process” by stopping EFCC from commencing any fresh process of investigation and or prosecution against him in respect of his tenure as Governor of Kogi State between May, 1999 and May, 2002 since he had already been arraigned on  80-count charge currently pending at the High Court of Lokoja, Kogi State.
