"The X-Men star, who played JeanGrey in the superhero movies, wore patent brogues, where thechunky style helped emphasiseher slender legs which wereencased in thick opaque tights." — Ciara Farmer, DailyMail.co.uk,26 Nov. 2015

Did you know?

Did you expect brogue to bedefined as "an Irish accent"?You're probably not alone. Ourdefinition is different becausebrogue has two homographs(words that are spelled—and inthis case pronounced—the samebut have different origins or partsof speech). Brogue the shoecomes from the Irish word bróg,which probably derives from an Old Norse term meaning "legcovering." Brogue the accentcomes from a different Irish word, barróg, which means "accent" or "speech impediment."

Be Trustworthy in Little Things!

'Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much.' Luke 16:10 NIV

Jesus said: ‘ Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much, and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much. So if you have not been trustworthy in handling worldly wealth, who will trust you with true riches? And if you have not been trustworthy with someone else’s property, who will give you property of your own? ’ (Luke 16:10–12 NIV) God won’t promote you beyond your current level of competence and commitment. Indeed, He’ll keep bringing you back to these two things until you get them right. As you walk with Him, He’ll increase your faith by testing you in settings that require only a little faith. And if you pass, He’ll expose you to circumstances that require more faith. Each time you prove your willingness to trust Him at a higher level, He will reveal a little more of Himself and entrust to you a greater measure of blessing. That’s how it works. Every small step of faith leads to a deeper, richer and more rewarding relationship with Him. When Michelangelo was painting the frescoes in the Sistine Chapel he spent endless hours lying on the scaffolding perfecting the details. It was a miserable job. A student, curious about why the renowned sculptor took such pains with details that could only be seen from a distance, asked, ‘Who will know whether or not it’s perfect?’ The master artist replied, ‘I will!’ And so will your Master—Jesus! What you’re doing today matters. It’s the determining factor in what God will call you to do tomorrow. So be trustworthy in little things.

Speak Up

'There is...a time to be silent and a time to speak.' Ecclesiastes 3:1; 7 NIV
The Bible has a lot to say about not criticising and passing judgment. But there are times when silence isn’t ‘golden’, it’s deadly. For example: (1)
Silence is deadly when you use it as a passive, retaliatory means of expressing your anger or displeasure . That’s called ‘emotional manipulation’. Jesus said, ‘ If your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault between you and him alone. If he hears you, you have gained your brother. ’ (Matthew 18:15 NKJV) Jesus is recommending pretty assertive behaviour by commanding us to take the initiative in addressing the ‘trespass’. Trespassing is the unauthorised crossing of a boundary, and many times we feel like we’ve been trespassed against or wronged. However, rather than addressing the issue directly with the offender, we resort to sulking and pouting. Jesus says, ‘Don’t do that!’ Your lack of communication can leave the wrongdoer unaware of their behaviour and make them more likely to repeat it. (2) Silence is deadly when you fail to defend someone against unwarranted criticism or vicious rumours . Don’t let fear of alienation and rejection cause you to let slander and character assassination go unchallenged, especially when you’re aware of facts to the contrary. (3) Silence is deadly when it results in your making an undesirable decision by default . The fact is, silence can indicate consent. Prayer was taken out of public schools in the United States because the majority stayed silent instead of speaking up. The Scripture says, ‘ There is…a time to be silent and a time to speak .’ So have the courage of your convictions and speak up!

The government of
Switzerland is prepared to
transfer to the Nigerian
government, another $300
million recovered from the
family of former military
ruler, Sani Abacha, foreign
minister, Geoffrey Onyeama,
announced Monday.
The money is part of an
estimated $5 billion stolen
and stashed in foreign
accounts by the late dictator.
Nigeria has in the last 10
years received over $1 billion
from the Swiss and American
governments, but there are
growing concerns past
administrations misused the
huge sum.
PREMIUM TIMES reported in
December 2015 how former
finance minister, Ngozi
Okonjo-Iweala, with the
approval of former President
Goodluck Jonathan,
authorised the diversion of at
least N61.4 billion ($300
million and £5.5 million)
from funds recovered from
Mr. Abacha, to the Office of
the National Security Adviser,
Sambo Dasuki, few weeks
before the 2015 presidential
election.
The former minister said the
money, which was not
approved by the National
Assembly, was meant for
purchase of military
equipment for the fight
against Boko Haram.
The money is believed to be
part of at least $2.1 billion
slush fund later distributed
by Mr. Dasuki to politicians
ahead of the polls. An
ongoing investigation into the
scandal as led to the
indictment of several high

Give God Your All

'Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think.' Ephesians 3:20 NKJV

If you only have a thimble-worth of capacity and you’re standing on the edge of a vast ocean, you have access to a lot of water but you won’t get much of it because your capacity is so small. If you have the capacity of a bucket you’ll get more than a thimble, but once the bucket is full the ocean can do you no more good. If you have a barrel you’ll get more than a bucket, but once the barrel is full you will still only have taken advantage of a miniscule part of the ocean. The idea is to offer God the biggest container possible. Offer Him all of you so that He can accomplish what He wants to do in your life. And no matter how successful you may be, you still haven’t maximised all that God wants to do in you and through you. Paul puts it this way: ‘Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us.’ When you give your life to Christ, the Holy Spirit takes up residence within you. That means if your life has been a failure thus far, He can turn it into a success. And if your life has been successful thus far, He can take you to a higher level of success. That’s why you should begin each morning by praying: ‘Lord, I make myself totally available to You this day; work through me to accomplish Your will.’ That’s a prayer God will answer.

MESSI WINS 2015 BALLON D'OR

21:08 0 Comments A+ a-

The Barcelona star capped a stunning year with his fifth World Player of the Year gong, beating off competition from team-mate Neymar and Real Madrid rival Cristiano Ronaldo.Lionel Messi has won the 2015 Fifa Ballon d'Or ahead of Real Madrid rival Cristiano Ronaldo and Barcelona team-mate Neymar, claiming the prestigious award at Monday's ceremony in Zurich. Messi received 41.33 per cent of the votes,
with Ronaldo (27.76%) in second place and Neymar (7.86%) third.
It is the Argentina international's fifth World Player of the Year title - more than any other player in history - and thwarts Ronaldo's
quest to tie his haul of gongs, with the Madrid star having picked up the award in each of the last two seasons.
"It's a very special moment for me, to be back here on this stage winning another Ballon d'Or after being in the audience
watching Cristiano win for two years," Messi said upon receiving his award. "It's incredible that it's my fifth, it's much more than anything I dreamed of as a kid.
"I want to thank all those who voted for me first of all. I also want to thank obviously my team-mates, as I always say without them none of this would ever have been possible.
"And lastly I want to thank football for everything it has brought me - both the bad and the good - because it has made me grow and learn always."
The Ballon d'Or award caps yet another remarkable year for Messi, who secured five trophies and a famous treble with Barcelona in a dominant 2015, ending the Catalan club's four-year wait for another Champions League
victory - his fourth title in Europe's premier club competition.
Messi scored a remarkable 52 goals for club and country across the calendar year - five less than Ronaldo - as well as contributing 26
assists in 61 appearances, scoring or assisting every 0.78 games.
The 27-year-old first won the Ballon d'Or in 2009, before it merged with Fifa's World Player of the Year award, and won it every year afterwards until 2012 when his
stranglehold on the award was finally broken by Ronaldo.

Growing Older and Better

'I shall not die, but live, and declare the works of the Lord.' Psalm 118:17 NKJV

Today people are living longer and enjoying better health. Given that fact, it would be wise to glean from their wisdom and value their talent. You may have noticed that television advertisers are targeting younger and younger people. Why? After all, isn’t a tube of toothpaste sold to an eighty-year-old just as profitable as one pitched to a kid? The idea that life should be winding down at sixty or seventy makes no sense. Immanuel Kant wrote one of his best philosophical works at the age of seventy-four. Verdi penned his classic ‘Ave Maria’ at eighty-five. Alfred Lord Tennyson was eighty when he wrote ‘Crossing the Bar’. Michelangelo was eighty-seven when he completed the Pietá, his greatest work of art. Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes set down some of his most brilliant opinions at the age of ninety. Titian painted his famous Allegory of the Battle of Lepanto at the age of ninety-eight. President Ronald Reagan was one of the most powerful men in the world at seventy-five. Noah was over six hundred years old when he came out of the ark and helped to start the world all over again. David the psalmist wrote two things worth noting about getting older: (1) ‘ They shall still bear fruit in old age ’ (Psalm 92:14 NKJV); (2) ‘ I shall not die, but live, and declare the works of the Lord.’ When the spotlight moves from you to the younger generation, don’t be discouraged. Just serve faithfully in the shadows, knowing that one day God will reward you openly for all you have done.

El Chapo, Escaped Mexican Drug Lord, Is Recaptured in Gun Battle

03:29 0 Comments A+ a-

MEXICO CITY — He became a byword for government incompetence, a figure who seemed invincible after he burrowed his
way out of the country’s most secure prison.
But on Friday, nearly six months after his escape, Joaquín Guzmán Loera, the Mexican drug lord known as El Chapo, was captured again after a fierce gun battle near the coast in his home state,
Sinaloa, Mexican officials said. “Mission accomplished: We have him,” President Enrique Peña Nieto announced.
The arrest ended one of the most
extensive manhunts undertaken by the government, involving every law
enforcement agency in the country and help from the United States.
But it was the marines, Mexico’s most-trusted military force, who managed to capture the fugitive in an early morning raid that left five people dead, the Mexican authorities said. An American official also described the raid as “a
Mexican op, planned and executed by Mexico .”
The government said late Friday that it had been watching a home in Los Mochis for more than a month when law enforcement officers finally saw movement on Thursday. Officials said that during the ensuing raid, Mr. Guzmán managed to slip away through the sewers, and then he surfaced, stole a car and was apprehended. The authorities took him to a hotel to wait
for backup. The capture of the drug lord concludes a deeply embarrassing chapter for the
government of Mr. Peña Nieto, which has been waylaid by a series of security and corruption scandals that reached
their low point with Mr. Guzmán’s
daring escape.
Now, a looming question is whether the Mexican authorities will try to hold Mr.
Guzmán for a third time — he has
already escaped from prison twice — or whether they will hand him over to the Americans. Mexican officials are busily debating the
issue. Some are arguing for a “fast-track” extradition that could put him in the United States quickly, while others want to continue a previous process that could take months, according to two people with knowledge of the discussions. Mr.
Guzmán, the head of Mexico’s most
powerful cartel, is facing indictments in at least seven American federal courts on
charges that include narcotics trafficking and murder.
With operations that span much of
Mexico, his organization has specialized in smuggling tons of drugs into the
United States through vast networks of tunnels deep beneath the border. His success has made him among the richest drug dealers in history: Forbes magazine estimated his net worth at close to $1billion.
Mr. Guzmán stunned the world last
summer when he stepped into the
shower in his cell, in the most secure wing of the prison, and abruptly vanished in full view of a video camera. Guards later discovered a small hole in
the shower floor.
It led to a mile-long tunnel to a
construction site. The tunnel was tall enough for Mr. Guzmán to walk through standing upright — his nickname translates to Shorty — and had been dug more than 30 feet underground. It was equipped with lighting, ventilation and a motorcycle on rails. Some engineers
estimated that the tunnel took more than a year and at least $1 million to build.
The prison break humiliated the
government of Mr. Peña Nieto, which had proclaimed the arrests of Mr. Guzmán and the leaders of other drug cartels as crucial achievements in restoring order and sovereignty to a country long beleaguered by the horrific violence associated with organized crime. It was particularly embarrassing
because Mr. Guzmán had already
escaped from prison in 2001, when his conspirators managed to smuggle him out. By some accounts, he escaped that
time by hiding in a laundry bin.
There are still major questions ahead, including the potential extradition of Mr. Guzmán to the United States. Shortly after Mr. Guzmán was captured in 2014,
the attorney general of Mexico at the time refused to extradite him to the United States, saying that the criminal would serve his time in Mexico first before he was sent to another country. Officials and analysts said it was an effort to show sovereignty and put some
distance between the Mexican
authorities and their American
counterparts, who often used a heavy hand to influence policy in Mexico. But that stance came to haunt the Peña Nieto administration after the kingpin escaped. The United States had issued a
formal request for his extradition less than three weeks before Mr. Guzmán broke out. A few months later, the Mexican government extradited several top drug lords to the United States, suggesting a new spirit of cooperation in the wake of
Mr. Guzmán’s escape. The people
extradited included an American citizen, Edgar Valdez Villarreal, a notorious figure known as “La Barbie,” as well as people charged with participating in the murders of a United States Consulate worker and an American immigration and customs agent.
While the likelihood that Mr. Guzmán could escape from an American maximum security prison is considered low, extradition would still come at a cost to the image of the Mexican state, some analysts say. “Extraditing him is a
way to say we cannot cope with this with our own institutions,” said Pablo A. Piccato, a history professor at Columbia University. “While this is something everyone knows, obviously the government has not been able to publicly recognize this or tackle it in the past.”
Several senior politicians from Mr. Peña Nieto’s party were already calling for
extradition, including Emilio Gamboa, the head of the governing party in the Senate, who told local news media that he agreed with the idea. In a statement on Friday, the American attorney general, Loretta E. Lynch, commended the Mexican authorities “who have worked tirelessly in recent months to bring Guzmán to justice.” But she did not directly answer the extradition question. The Justice Department “is proud to maintain a close and effective relationship with our Mexican counterparts, and we look forward to continuing our work together to ensure
the safety and security of all our people,” she said.
In the aftermath of Mr. Guzmán’s escape last July, American officials were frustrated with what they considered Mexico’s resistance to accepting help in the manhunt. After his escape, American officials offered to give their Mexican
counterparts whatever assistance they could.
When Mexico rebuffed the offer, many officials in both countries worried that Mr. Guzmán might never be caught. In October, security forces said they had
located Mr. Guzmán in the remote
northwestern mountains where he had been hiding out, an area known as the Golden Triangle at the border of his home state of Sinaloa, Durango and Chihuahua. After a gun battle, officials said, he escaped, with wounds to his face
and leg. The authorities ultimately captured Mr. Guzmán in Los Mochis, a coastal town of
about 250,000 people that has long been known as a center of boxing in Mexico. “People knew he would be caught any time; the government was going after him hard,” said Adrián Cabrera, a blogger in Culiacán, the capital of  Sinaloa, adding that Mr. Guzmán was
still a popular figure in Sinaloa.
“The new corridos will start coming out pretty soon,” Mr. Cabrera said, referring to the songs often used to glorify the exploits of local drug traffickers. “He’s from here. He has a lot of sympathy here. It’s his turf.”
When Mr. Guzmán was finally
recaptured, the president broke the news himself, via Twitter. Given his sagging popularity — his ratings are the lowest of any president in the last 25 years — Mr. Peña Nieto seemed eager to declare the success personally.
In a statement on Friday, Mr. Peña Nieto said that the arrest was the culmination of months of work, an example of Mexico’s ability to overcome adversity.
“Our security institutions have
demonstrated that our citizens can trust them and that they have the stature, strength and determination to accomplish any mission they are tasked with,” Mr. Peña Nieto said.
Mr. Guzmán’s lawyers have already filed legal injunctions against his extradition to the United States. Wherever he ends up, few people here think that his capture will change much for the government’s popularity, life for Mexicans or the strength of the Sinaloa cartel. “This won’t have much effect on their internal structure,” said Eduardo
Guerrero, a Mexico City-based security analyst. “They are prepared for this kind of news. They probably even have a protocol for it.”

GOD VALUES WHAT YOU DO

'God...will not forget your work and the love you have shown.' Hebrews 6:10 NIV

Satan will try to convince you that you don’t count for much in God’s Kingdom because you don’t have a high-profile gift like preaching, teaching or leading in public. Nothing could be further from the truth: ‘ God…will not forget your work and the love you have shown…as you…helped His people .’ God sees you working behind the scenes day in and day out, caring for ageing loved ones, raising your children, encouraging others and contributing where you can. Will Rogers said, ‘We can’t all be heroes. Somebody has to sit on the kerb and clap as they go by.’ So when you think you’re too small to do big things, try doing small things with a big heart of love. You never know what you can do until you try! James Sizoo said: ‘Glamour isn’t greatness, applause isn’t fame, and prominence isn’t eminence. The man of the hour isn’t apt to be the man of the ages. A stone may sparkle but that doesn’t make it a diamond. People may have money but that doesn’t make them a success. It’s the seemingly unimportant people who determine the course of history. The greatest forces in the universe are never spectacular. Summer showers do more good than hurricanes, but they don’t get a lot of publicity. The world would soon die but for the fidelity, loyalty, creativity, and commitment of those whose names are unhonoured and unsung.’ Today God values what you do. ‘ Don’t get discouraged and give up, for [you] will reap a harvest of blessing at the appropriate time ’ (See Galatians 6:9).

Pray About It

'Is anyone among you afflicted (ill-treated, suffering evil)? He should pray.' James 5:13 AMP
It’s amazing how long we put up with things before we decide to pray about them. The hymn writer says, ‘O what peace we often forfeit; O what needless pain we bear. All because we do not carry everything to God in prayer.’ We complain to our friends. We wonder why God doesn’t do something. We wrestle with the situation in our minds, yet we fail to take advantage of the simplest solution there is—prayer. Charles Spurgeon wrote, ‘The desire to commune with God is intensified by the failure of all other sources of consolation.’ We’re all guilty of treating prayer as a last-ditch effort. When you say things like, ‘Nothing else is working. Maybe I should pray about it,’ do you realise what that says about you? That you really don’t understand or believe in the power of prayer as you should. You’re carrying burdens you don’t need to carry, and life is harder than it has to be because you don’t realise how powerful prayer is. If you did, you’d pray about everything—not as a last resort but as a first response. The Bible says, ‘ Is anyone among you afflicted (ill-treated, suffering evil)? He should pray .’ When you’ve a problem: pray. When someone hurts you: pray. When you’re sick: pray. When you feel like giving up: pray. When someone you love is suffering: pray. When you’re discouraged: pray. When you don’t know what to do: pray. Jesus, who prayed early in the morning and late at night, said, ‘ Whatever things you ask when you pray, believe that you receive them, and you will have them .’ (Mark 11:24 NKJV) So pray about it.

STEP INTO THE WATER

'This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.' Matthew 3:17 NKJV

When Jesus was baptised, ‘the heavens were opened to Him…And suddenly a voice came from Heaven, saying, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” ’ (Matthew 3:16–17 NKJV) That day when Jesus stepped into the River Jordan, He was stepping into the fullness of God’s purpose for His life. Those waters were teeming with the sins of mankind. John had baptised multitudes of converts there; their sins figuratively passing from them into the sea of God’s forgetfulness, just like the waters of the River Jordan end up in the Dead Sea. Maybe you’re appalled at the idea of Jesus wading into sin. But He was doing it to fulfil the purpose of God: redemption for you. Jesus was exactly where God wanted Him to be, doing exactly what God wanted Him to do. That’s why His Father announced, ‘ This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. ’ There’s a lesson here for you. Doing God’s will sometimes means stepping into messy situations and troubled waters. But when you obey God and do what He says, you won’t have to speak up for yourself or fight for yourself. God will command whatever forces are involved to yield to you, honour you, listen to you and even bless you. You won’t have to flounder around for the right answer, or wonder if something is right for you. God will give you the ability and resources you need because you’re where He wants you to be, doing what He wants you to do. So the word for you today is ‘step into the water’.

FG to expand NYSC scheme – Minister

22:19 0 Comments A+ a-

The Minister of Youth Development and Sports, Mr. Solomon Dalong, has said the Federal Government plans to expand the National Youth Service Corps scheme to include skill acquisition and entrepreneurial training.
Dalong said this on Tuesday during an inspection tour of the Lagos State NYSC orientation camp in the Iyana Ipaya area of the state.
He said, “Apart from the basic orientation programme, the NYSC scheme should also move into including professional and enterprising programmes to support and motivate those who would not want to embrace public services in the country.
“After the mandatory one-year service, the Federal Government is planning an extension, to professionally train interested corps members in skill acquisition, enterprising and professional programmes.
“Corps members with keen interest would be retained and some financial token given to them as start-up capital in furtherance of their skill.
“This is because due to our research, we found out that people abandon school due to uncertainty of the future. Hence, we believe this would help reduce the unemployed graduate ratio and curtail pressure on white-collar job as a means to win the war against poverty.”
The minister explained that graduates who received addition training after the mandatory one-year service would be provided with a start-up capital at the end of the training.
He also said that the Federal Government would not succumb to agitations from some quarters to scrap the NYSC scheme as its merits outweighed the disadvantages.
According to him, the scheme has not only enhanced the socio-cultural and ethnic integration in the country, it has also promoted national unity.
“We cannot dismiss the gains of the NYSC scheme in integrating Nigeria; I will stand firmly for the sustenance of the system, to continue in its capacity-building of Nigeria citizens because, it is an indispensable aspect of diversifying our culture,” he said.
Dalong expressed satisfaction with the state of the Lagos NYSC orientation camp, and thanked the Lagos State government for its support for the scheme.
He, however, stressed that the inadequate facilities at the NYSC orientation camp was one of the challenges of the scheme.
He said, “Nigeria did not plan to have the number of graduates in this present dispensation. If we had planned effectively, the concept of NYSC camping would have started with a permanent and effective structure.
“The visionaries of the scheme did not anticipate the lifespan of the scheme after the Civil War; the implementation of the scheme was a strategy to mobilise and integrate Nigerians together, hence, the huge number of graduates each year has put much pressure on the facilities, calling for constant renovation and upgrading.”
The Director-General of NYSC, Brig. Gen. Johnson Bamidele Olawumi, expressed gratitude to the minister for his visit and promised that his administration would do its best to uplift the NYSC scheme towards the economic growth and development of the country.

Chewing gum can boost your mental performance

22:16 0 Comments A+ a-

Though our mums tried to stop us from picking up this habit, many of us can’t stop chewing gums when we are bored.
While many perceive chewing gum as a habit that depicts promiscuity, recklessness and disobedience, chewing gum is a common habit that many people cannot resist. Those in this category believe that it helps them to stay awake during long meetings, just as it freshen their breath.
The jury is still out on the rights and wrongs of chewing this popular candy.
However, new studies suggest that chewing gums may not be so bad, after all, for adults.
If you are in the habit of popping gum in your mouth after a meal or when you are bored, then you may be glad to know that the health benefits of chewing gum goes beyond keeping you awake when you are reading, writing or working.
Scientists say that chewing gum helps you to learn. Psychologists from the University of Northumbria, United Kingdom, found that people who chewed gum throughout produced significantly better scores than people those who did not.
The lead author of the study, Andrew Scholey, states that the gum-chewers’ scores were 24 per cent higher than those that did not on tests of immediate word recall, and 36 per cent higher on tests of delayed word recall.
They were also more accurate on tests of spatial working memory.
He says, “These results provide the first evidence that chewing gum can improve long-term and working memory. There are a number of potential explanations – but they are all very speculative.”
Still on how chewing gum boosts one’s ability to retain information, in March 2000, Japanese researchers showed that brain activity in the hippocampus, an area important for memory, increases while people chew.
Scholey adds, “One interesting thing we saw in our study was that chewing increased heart rate. Anything that improves delivery of things like oxygen in the brain, such as an increased heart rate, is a potential cognitive enhancer to some degree.”
The scientists recommend that people should chew gum while multi-tasking or preparing for a big day to relieve stress and tension.
A research conducted on students who chew gum during exams shows that they tend to be more alert and focused.
A 40-person study of gum chewers showed a reduction in anxiety as compared to non-gum chewers by nearly 17 per cent during mild stress and nearly 10 per cent in moderate stress.
Also, participants experienced greater levels of alertness when they chewed gum.
Gum chewers showed improvement in alertness over non-gum chewers by nearly 19 per cent during mild stress and eight per cent in moderate stress.
So, whenever you feel irritated or frustrated, you might find that chewing gum can help you to relax.
If you are currently trying to lose weight, chewing gum can also prove to be beneficial for you.
Nutritionists have maintained over the years that chewing gum curbs appetites and food cravings. So, the next time you crave a snack or a second helping of fried rice and chicken, pop a stick of gum in your mouth instead.
Contrary to what we were told and taught, chewing gum only causes does tooth aches or gum diseases when it is loaded with sugar.
A dentist, Dr. Chuks Madueke, says if one is suffering from oral health problems like halitosis (bad breath) or gum infection, one might want to chew some gum to relieve these symptoms.
He says, “When you chew gum, your saliva production is also stimulated. Saliva has antibacterial properties that help to flush out food debris, remaining sugars and other harmful acids in your mouth.
“We will recommend that the gum is sugar-free, as it has been found to be effective in protecting the enamel of the teeth. In fact, chewing on some sugar-free gum after meals can lessen tooth cavities.”
Adolescents may want to take it easy on chewing gum. Experts have fingered chewing gum as a cause of migraine in teenagers.
The findings published in Paediatrics Neurology showed that 26 out of 30 patients with migraine, who stopped chewing gum had significant improvement, and 19 had complete headache resolution. When 20 of the improved patients stopped chewing gum again, all of them reported an immediate relapse of symptoms.

NO AUTOMATIC SHIRTS FOR OLYMPICS – SIASIA

The Dream Team VI trainer has said that only the best legs will be picked for the Rio Olympics in August while targeting the gold medal
Coach Samson Siasia has said no player is certain of a place in Nigeria U23 squad for the Rio Olympics.
The Dream Team VI qualified for the global sports showpiece having emerged as African champions at the Caf U23 Africa Cup of Nations in Senegal.
Despite the burden of selecting his provisional squad for the men’s football event, he disclosed that only the best players will be picked to represent the country as he targets the Olympics gold medal.
“Any of them selected will now be added to the players who made us proud in Senegal for a full camping,” Siasia told the NFF website.
“Mind you, no player is yet guaranteed a shirt in the team, as I have always said only the best legs will make it to Rio de Janeiro.
"Since we qualified for the football event of the Rio Olympics, a lot of players both at home and abroad have been calling me that they want to play for the country, so myself and my assistants intend to use the first week of camping to see these players who will bear the cost of their trip to the camp and accommodate themselves.
"For now, time is not on our hands and as such, we need to start work in a bid to present a team that will make Nigerians proud in Brazil. For me, after winning silver at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, my next target is to go all out for gold in Rio, and I strongly believe we have the players that can achieve this."
He also intends to make use of all the Fifa free days for friendlies that would help him and his technical crew monitor invited players very closely.
"For now my plans are to utilize fully all the Fifa windows beginning with the one in March, with the hope of taking players selected to an accessible country in Europe where all the overseas -based players can come with ease, play one or two friendly games and then have them return to their respective clubsides,” he concluded.

UN peacekeepers in CAR hit with fresh sex abuse allegations

03:27 0 Comments A+ a-

UN peacekeepers are facing fresh allegations that they sexually abused four young girls in the Central African Republic, the latest in a wave of child rape cases to hit the mission.
The United Nations said on Tuesday it had informed three countries of the claims and asked them to investigate their soldiers serving in the MINUSCA mission in Bangui.
A UN spokesperson declined to name the countries and to specify how many troops were involved, but sources said the accused soldiers are from Gabon, Egypt and Morocco.
The UN mission said in a statement that it was also investigating allegations against “international forces” in Bangui, without providing details.
The latest allegations bring the number of sexual abuse cases involving UN peacekeepers in the Central African Republic to 26.
The UN mission “is investigating new allegations concerning both sexual exploitation and abuse and other misconduct by UN peacekeepers in Bangui”, UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric told reporters in New York on Tuesday.
Mission chief Parfait Onanga-Anyanga told troops and police in Bangui that there would be “zero tolerance” for such actions and “no complacency for perpetrators”.
The four girls, all minors, received medical care, along with shoes, clothes and hygiene kits.
The troops were accused of rape, sexual exploitation and transactional sex with the girls, some of whom were living in a camp for displaced civilians in Bangui, a UN official told AFP.

NNPC: Four Refineries Now Producing 6.76m Litres of Petrol Daily

03:16 0 Comments A+ a-

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) on Tuesday said four of its refineries in Kaduna, Port Harcourt and Warri are now producing over 6.76 million litres of petrol per day.
It explained in a statement from its Group General Manager, Public Affairs, Ohi Alegbe, that the production ratios from the plants indicated that the Port Harcourt refinery which was re-streamed a week earlier was now producing about 4.09 million litres of petrol; the Kaduna Refinery which also recently came back on stream was producing about 1.29 million litres and Warri which it said came up last Sunday was posting a yield of about 1.38 million litres to make up the total daily production of 6.76 million litres.
The four refineries were built to collectively refine 445,000 barrels of crude oil daily but had consistently come short of that for years.
Alegbe, however, said daily production from the refineries is projected to increase to over 10 million litres per day by the end of January.
He noted that the volumes of petrol produced from the refineries which are currently operating at an appreciable percentage of their nameplate capacities will help stabilise the fuel supply and distribution situation in the country.
The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources who doubles as the Group Managing Director of the corporation, Dr. Ibe Kachikwu, had in December 2015, stated that he was more concerned about getting the refineries back to an appreciable production level.
Kachikwu expressed optimism that the refineries would gradually come up to produce up to 10 million litres of petrol per day, thus cutting the country’s petrol importation by that volume.
“My concentration right now is to make sure that the refineries are working, the more they work, the higher the chances that I will be closer to the sort of pricing we are comfortable with than when they are not working, that is why you see me putting a lot of energies in going around the refineries.
“Kaduna is doing about 1.5 million litres, hopefully, it will be getting into two million very quickly once the FCC is working; Port Harcourt, when it comes back with a combination of VDU and the FCC, we will probably be looking at about five million litres. Ideally, we want to get to about 10 million capacity out of the about 40 million that we say is the national consumption per day, that is the trend,” he said then.
The minister also added: “If all things were equal, I think the maximum cap for Kaduna will be in the two to three million range; Port Harcourt will probably be five and six million and Warri if it comes up, will be another three or four million, so, Warri, is projected to come back between early and mid January and I will say that by the end of January, if all things were working and we do not have any other complications arising from these aging plants, we will expect to see 10 million litres.”
President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday disclosed that an inter-ministerial committee would soon be established to speed up the re-organisation and reformation of the NNPC.
A statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr Femi Adesina, said Buhari spoke yesterday at a meeting with the Chief Executive Officer of the International Finance Corporation (IFC), Jin-Yong Cai, at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
Adesina in a statement said the reformation of the NNPC had become inevitable in view of the corruption and abuse of its present structure in the recent past.
He said the president also cited Nigeria’s current need to maximise income from every source of revenue as further imperative for reforming the NNPC.
Buhari said his administration was doing everything possible to boost national revenue  in order to effectively implement its programme of change and significantly improve the living conditions of Nigerians.
Adesina said Jin-Yong Cai, who is also the Vice President of the IFC, told Buhari that with proper reformation and re-organisation, NNPC could become Africa’s largest company.
“You have brought monumental changes since you got to power. You have brought in strong leadership and Nigeria has the opportunity under you to become highly reputable.
“In NNPC, you can create an entity that is dominant in Africa, and this is the right time to do it with the momentum you have created,” he told the president.

Don't Let Fear Stop You(2)

'...Matthew got up and followed Him.' Matthew 9:9 NIV

Collecting taxes for the Romans was a lucrative job. But for a Jew like Matthew it meant betraying your own people. As a result he was despised and excluded from religious worship. But that didn’t stop Jesus from calling him to be a disciple. And when He did, Matthew didn’t hesitate; he ‘got up and followed Him .’ Here’s a man most of his fellow citizens would have considered a traitor. Jesus saw latent loyalty in Matthew, the hidden promise, the waiting potential. Others might have seen a loser but Jesus saw the man who would record His words and deeds and write a Gospel to bless future billions. It doesn’t matter who we are or what we’ve done, Jesus has a plan for us. And He wants each and every one of us to fulfil our God-given, divine purpose. It’s natural to be apprehensive when you’re facing change and uncertainty, but God says, ‘Take courage!…Don’t be afraid.’ (Matthew 14:27 NIV) Jon Walker writes: ‘God knows it involves a challenging stretch… He knows our abilities and resources aren’t what strengthen us for the journey (Philippians 4:13). When we fear we can’t do the things God calls us to do…that He won’t protect and provide…we embrace the lie that our circumstances are bigger than God, and our faith gets placed on the altar of our own perceptions. If you’re like me you often fear what’s behind the curtain of God’s call, and—frustratingly—He won’t let me peek… He keeps the curtain of our future drawn so we’ll learn to live by faith and not by sight, so we’ll become certain of what we hope for, and become sure of God even when we can’t see how He’s working in our current circumstances.’

Labour ministry alerts Nigerians to recruitment scam

22:43 0 Comments A+ a-

The Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment has alerted Nigerians to a recruitment scam online calling for jobless youths to submit their curriculum vitae for job placements.
The publications had stated that graduates with qualifications ranging from secondary school certificates to Bachelor’s degrees across the country should submit their curriculum vitae to Federal Government secretariats before January 7, 2016.
Many unemployed Nigerians on Monday thronged the federal secretariats in state capitals to submit their CVs, with the belief that the initiative was aimed at reducing the high unemployment rate in the country.
However, the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige, warned Nigerian youths not to fall prey to online publications requesting them to submit applications for employment at the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment headquarters and zonal offices nationwide.
The minister, in a statement signed by the ministry’s Deputy Director, Press, Samuel Olowookere, advised the general public to disregard the false directive, saying that it did not emanate from the Federal Government through the ministry.
According to him, the graduate teachers conversion programme, graduate internship scheme, vocational skills acquisition and conditional cash transfer, among others, are programmes being planned by the ministry for the benefit of the populace.
Ngige said Nigerians would be formally informed whenever such programmes were ready to be rolled out.
He said, “In view of the apprehension that the above false information has generated, it is pertinent to point out that the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari is committed to the creation of decent employment opportunities for teeming unemployed Nigerians and has perfected plans for massive job creation through well-thought-out programmes such as the Graduate Teachers’ Conversion Programme, Graduate Internship Scheme, Vocational Skills Acquisition and Upgrading and Conditional Cash Transfer for the vulnerable persons, including market women.
“The public is hereby warned to disregard the said online publications as any person who does otherwise does so at his or her own risk, especially when some of the websites have been requesting applicants to pay what they dubbed application fees.”

Oil slump: Buhari meets IMF boss, Lagarde today

22:36 0 Comments A+ a-

The Managing Director, International Monetary Fund, Ms Christine Lagarde, on Monday arrived Abuja on a four-day working visit and has been scheduled to meet President Muhammadu Buhari to discuss some of the challenges facing the Nigerian economy.
The Nigerian economy is currently facing fiscal and monetary challenges such as the drop in global oil price, which has impacted negatively on the country’s revenue, weak external reserves, and increased pressure on the naira in the foreign exchange market, among others.
The IMF boss arrived the country through the Presidential Wing of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport aboard a private jet, with registration number ZS-PNP, at about 2:54pm.
She was received by a Federal Government delegation led by the Minister of Finance, Mrs. Kemi Adeosun, and the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Mr. Godwin Emefiele.
Largade, spotting a white shirt, with a black tuxedo suit and a pair of black and white trousers, refused to speak with journalists who had waited with the minister and the CBN governor for over two hours at the airport before her arrival.
In a statement later released on its website, the IMF said that being the largest economy in Africa, the visit would provide an opportunity to strengthen the Fund’s partnership with Nigeria.
It said apart from meeting Buhari, Lagarde would meet with other stakeholders in the economy such as the National Assembly, business leaders, prominent women and representatives of the civil society.
The statement also quoted Lagarde as saying, “I look forward to productive meetings with President Buhari and his colleagues as they address important economic challenges, most importantly the impact of low oil prices.
“Nigeria is working hard to improve its business environment, promote opportunities for growth in the private sector, and strengthen social cohesion, all areas where the government has an important role to play.”
According to the statement, Lagarde will also travel to Cameroon where she is expected to meet with President Paul Biya and his economic team as well as private sector executives, women leaders, and other members of the Cameroonian society.
She is also expected to meet with the Finance ministers of the six-member countries of the Economic and Monetary Community of Central Africa on January 8.
Prof. Sheriffdeen Tella of the Department of Economics, Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye, Ogun State, said the IMF chief’s visit should not be seen as an “ordinary visit or courtesy call.”
“I think they want to convey their position with regards to the management of our economy, particularly with the devaluation (of the naira) issue they have been pursuing,” stated.
Tella, who said he supported the President’s stand on naira devaluation, said, “I believe the central bank will be ready to prove why it is not necessary for us to devalue our currency, because that’s what they (IMF) want to pursue. That’s what they do many times.
“I think the meeting is about explaining directly why there is a need for the CBN to devalue the currency. They will also make suggestions on the benefits of such a devaluation. They will make some suggestions as if they are trying to assist us, but they are not always right.”
Tella said the IMF might also raise the issue of diversification of the Nigerian economy.
He added, “But we know we have to do that, and we hope that it will work out this time round, making sure that we look at agriculture as well as the mining sectors. They will emphasise that there is a need for us to develop those sectors.
“They will talk about further privatisation of enterprises, because they continue to promote market economy even when it does not work in some economies.”
The Head, Investment Research, Afrinvest West Africa Limited, Mr. Ayodeji Ebo, said, “I think the visit will enable the government to attend to the several policy issues that we have been trying to sort out in the past months.
“The first major thing I think may be presented will be the re-negotiation of our current loans in the light of the burden that debt servicing is constituting in our budget, which is about 23 per cent of the total budget.
“They may also try to see how we can manage the shock from the oil crisis by trying to advise on how we can grow or expand our tax base. In addition, they may also raise the issue of their stand regarding this current foreign exchange issue by reiterating their stand on how this can be resolved so that we are able to attract both foreign direct and portfolio investments in 2016.”

Don't Let Fear Stop You (1)

'He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion.' Philippians 1:6 NIV

Has God called you to do something you don’t feel capable of doing? Could you think of a dozen others better suited for the job? It doesn’t matter what you think, God didn’t choose somebody else! He chose you in spite of your limitations and insecurities. Your inadequacies don’t surprise Him. In fact, His ‘ power works best in weakness.’ (2 Corinthians 12:9 NLT) Jon Walker says: ‘You may…hide your weaknesses from others, but you can’t hide them from God. He created you (do you think He made a mistake?) He created you with weaknesses to keep you on your knees… without them to push you back to God you’ll get prideful… and He won’t allow you to use them as an excuse for avoiding your mission or ignoring your purpose. If God is calling you to a monumental task, He will equip you to complete it—and that includes the Holy Spirit working from inside you. So focus on His strength, not yours. Don’t think about how incapable you are for the task. Remember, God is bigger than anything you face, no matter how overwhelming it may appear.’ The Bible says we were ‘ created in Christ…to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do .’ (Ephesians 2:10 NIV) God’s plans are never an afterthought. He designed you for a specific purpose, and the One who ‘ began a good work in you will carry it on to completion.’ So instead of letting fear stop you, let it motivate you to get up and get going!

Article by Femi Fani Kayode:President Buhari, the media chat & the words of a Tyrant

22:11 0 Comments A+ a-

Mr. President, you will recall that I wrote you an open letter on December 28th, 2015 which I sincerely hope that you found most gratifying, illuminating and helpful. That was two days before your Presidential media chat which took place on December 30th. I hereby humbly crave your indulgence to add an addendum to that open letter.
That is what this contribution represents. I hope and pray that this second letter, which will be the last, will further enlighten you and impart a little more wise counsel to you that will result in assisting you to properly appreciate the complexities of our times. Mr. President it is pertinent to note that approximately two hundred and sixty five years ago one of the founding fathers of the United States of America, Mr. Benjamin Franklin, said "rebellion to tyrants is obedience to God".
I am sure that you will agree with me when I say that he was absolutely right. Just in case you do not know who Benjamin Franklin was permit me to point out the fact that he is a man that is reverred by the American people and much of the civilised world up until today and he is the individual whose face appears on the one hundred U.S. dollar bills that are used till today.
He was a great statesman, diplomat, politician and intellectual and most important of all he was a deeply courageous man who was motivated by his deepest convictions and his christian values and who was prepared to risk life and liberty and stand up to tyranny. I guess most Nigerian leaders have much to learn from him especially at times like this. Yet thankfully all is not lost and at least a few of our politicians are beginning to find their voice and speak out against the evil in the land.
Permit me to share one example with you. A few days ago Chief Olisa Metuh, the National Publicity Secretary of our great party the PDP, exposed the fact that there was an orchestrated attempt by your government to intimidate, silence and utterly decimate and crush the opposition. In open defiance to what can best be described as this insidious and sinister agenda he told the world that ''President Buhari is not God and we will not worship him".
Whether he knows it or not Metuh has not only spoken for the PDP but also for the overwhelming majority of the Nigerian people. Permit me to add the following words to his timely contribution. Woe unto those that tremble before men of power and that worship false gods. Destruction and perdition awaits those who bow before Baal, who exalt the servants of Belial, who kiss the ring of the Baphomet, who say ''Buhari is God'' and who crawl at the feet of the Lord of the Flies.
Mr. President the point is simple and clear: you are not God and even though we respect your office we will never bow before you, we will never worship you, we will not relent in our efforts to oppose you and, regardless of your constant threats and wicked intentions, we have absolutely no fear of you. This is because our fate and destiny and the future of our beloved country lies in the hands of the Living God and not in the hands of a misguided and tyrannical dictator like your good self. Injustice, persecution and tyranny last only for a season.
At the appointed time the Lord will step in and He will deliver and vindicate the falsely accused and the righteous captive. He will also avenge the spilling of innocent blood and He will fight the cause of the martyrs. With this in mind and regardless of the dangerous counsel of the hardliners and extremists that surround you, I urge you to please take note of the following: Sheik Ibrahim El Zakzaky, Colonel Sambo Dasuki and Mr. Nnamdi Kanu, who are all political prisoners, must NOT die under mysterious circumstances whilst they are in your custody.
No matter what your advisers and those in your inner circle tell you if, God forbid, this were to happen the fall-out and consequences for your reputation and your administration would be too much to bear. This brings me to another issue which is a cause for grave concern.
Your stated resolve not to obey court orders and to deny Nigerians their right to bail after the courts have given it to them is not only an affront and gratuitous insult to the Judiciary but it is also a violation of the constitution. I say this because, unlike military dictatorships, democracy enjoys and derives its power and legitimacy from the inviolable and sacred principle of ''separation of powers''.
What this means is that the Executive arm of Government, which by the grace of God you head today, is distinct and separate from the Legislature and the Judiciary. As head of the Executive and President of the Federal Republic, you have absolutely no power or right to interfere in the processes of the Legislature (which is the National Assembly) or the Judiciary.
Both have their own rules, regulations and leadership and the constitution guides them and guarantees them total and complete independence from you. As a matter of fact they are charged by the laws of our land and the constitution to act as a check and balance on you as President and to ensure that you do not abuse your power or subject your people to tyranny.
Mr. President I watched you on your media chat the other day and I am constrained to tell you that you not only abused your power but that you also crossed the line with some of the things that you said. For example you have no right to tell the courts how to administer justice and who and who not to grant bail.
Again you have no business to tell the legislature which laws to pass and how to run their affairs. Again you have no right and neither do you have the power to pronounce any Nigerian citizen guilty of any crime unless and until a duly constituted court of law has done so. You cannot be the prosecutor, judge and jury in any criminal proceeding and this is especially so when you initiated those proceedings and you are the accuser
To attempt to do so is not only unacceptable and irresponsible but it is also heartless and unkind. The fact that most of our senior and respected lawyers have refused to tell you this simply because they are scared of you or because they are looking for patronage from your government does not mean that what you are doing is lawful or acceptable.
What you are doing is morally and legally reprehensible and it is unacceptable in any democratic and civilized society. In the same vein you have no right to try to stop members of the opposition or the general public from criticizing you or condemning your obvious failings. Mr. President criticism, opposition and dissent are the lifeblood of democracy and without accommodating and tolerating them you cannot claim to be a democrat.
You have no right to attempt to cower or intimidate the fourth estate of the realm, which is the media, or attempt to pervert and corrupt the Nigerian public with daily doses of lies, falsehood, deceit and propaganda which is being duly and dutifully administered by your Minister of Information and your numerous media aides.
All these things give me and millions of your other subjects concern yet it doesn't stop there. Perhaps the most disturbing example of your sheer insensitivity was your reaction to the question about Igbo marginalization during the media chat. In response to that question you asked "who is marginalizing who" and went further to ask "what do the Igbo want?"
Mr. President I wish to remind you that it is an incontrovertible fact that in just seven months your government has succeeded in marginalizing the Igbo more than any other Federal Government in living memory and certainly since the civil war. This is a record that you ought not to be proud of. What the Igbo want is fairness, equal rights, equal representation, equity and respect.
They also believe that they have the right to determine their own future and make their own choices. Mr. President I do not believe that this Is this too much for them to ask given the fact that they have contributed, perhaps more than most, to national development and integration in the last forty five years? It is not too much to ask given the fact that no less than three million of their people, including one million innocent children, were slaughtered during our civil war in the name of keeping Nigeria one? I have no doubt that you will remember this very well Mr. President given the fact that you were one of those that prosecuted that war and fought in it.
You will also remember the brutal mass murder and the war crimes and crimes against humanity that were perpetrated against the unarmed and defenseless Igbo civilian population of Asaba in 1968 when over one thousand of them were rounded up, taken to the town square and shot to death for no just cause. The soldiers that carried out that unspeakable act of cowardice, brutality and barbarity were under the command of your professional colleague, the late Head of State, General Murtala Mohammed.
Mr. President that was a dark, shameful and ignoble chapter in our history which still cries out for justice and reparations. Needless to say the pain of such horrendous events and numerous others that the Igbo have been subjected to by the Nigerian state and those that control it over the last fifty five years still haunts them.
The truth is that regardless of the obvious contempt that you have for them the Igbo will continue to insist on justice, fairness and on having their rights respected in our country. If you refuse to address their numerous and legitimate grievances and you refuse to treat them with the understanding, sensitivity and compassion that they deserve, the agitation for self-determination, secession and the yearning for the establishment of a new nation called Biafra will wax stronger and stronger until it reaches dangerous and irresistible proportions.
That is what you are toying with Mr. President and if that were to happen be rest assured that the Yoruba would take a cue from it and so would the people of the Niger Delta. It would effectively signify the beginning of the balkanisation of Nigeria. Whether you and those with your world view like to hear it or not, that is the bitter truth. May the Ancient of Days grant you the wisdom, knowledge and understanding to accept it and to do something about it.
May the Lord of the Universe give you the foresight and the insight to appreciate the fact that Nigeria cannot survive a second civil war. Mr. President I sincerely hope that you do not take offence at my admonitions and counsel. I speak only out of concern for the fortunes of your administration, your reputation and out of love for my country.
God bless Nigeria.
